Fearful Ends aims to find a way to allow players to safely roleplay their characters succumbing to the mental stress of supernatural horrors, while protecting the emotional well being of all the real people sitting around the table. This can be a very difficult balance to strike, but doing so has been a foundational goal for this project from the very beginning.
We’ve engaged sensitivity readers who are experts in mental health and emotional well-being. These dedicated individuals have meticulously combed through every aspect of our system to ensure that characters’ experiences of mental and emotional collapse are portrayed with empathy and understanding. From mechanics for broadcasting intent early to ensuring all mental stress effects avoid clinical terminology and focus on stress reactions any individual would display, we’ve done everything we can think of to create a safe play environment the still allows players to explore the dark corners of their character’s psyche.
But we’re certainly not the first ones to consider safety concerns in roleplaying games. There are lots of other great safety tools one can use in Fearful Ends or any roleplaying game, such as x-card, lines and veils, or CATS. Head on over to the Safety page of the Fearful Ends website to learn more about these tools and more. And don’t forget to follow us on Kickstarter for the upcoming launch of Fearful Ends!
